With the Sturmgeschütz III awaiting a new radiator, the team turned their attention to the LP1 this week, while also achieving a milestone on the Wheatcroft Collection Sd.Kfz.223.
STURMGESCHÜTZ III
The team removed the engine deck and fan to extract the radiator. Initial inspection had revealed small visible damage which we repaired, but further examination uncovered a larger leak in the core. The radiator will now need to be sent to a specialist near us – who has done work for the Foundation previously – to have a new core manufactured.
Australian LP1
With work on the LP1 currently on hold while we wait for parts from external work, the team took the opportunity to progress other aspects of the restoration.
Alex has stripped the gearbox and is now cleaning all the components, compiling a list of bearings needed in case the originals are worn. We’ve also repaired the seat frames and raising mechanism.
THE WHEATCROFT COLLECTION SD.KFZ.223
A milestone this week: the windscreens are now complete and fitted. We shared a photo on our social media – a satisfying moment after all the machining, fabrication, and paintwork that went into them.
RESEARCH UPDATE
Our latest Inside Track article is now available for members: “The Last Jagdpanther Versuchswagen“, covering recent findings from our ongoing research into our Jagdpanther’s history.
LOOKING AHEAD
Next week we’ll continue work on the LP1 while following up on the Sturmgeschütz III radiator and the Sd.Kfz.223 dynamo, which is still with the specialist.
