Horch 3.5 V8 engine runs, Sd.Kfz.223 armoured hull awaits

Last minute electrical fittings have taken place this week allowing the Horch 3.5 V8 engine of our Sd.Kfz.223 3.Serie to be started for the first time. A few teething issues have been spotted. The first issue was an oil leak which was resolved. The next was an electrical issue where the engine was not firing on the left hand bank. All hands on the pump, Distributor was the problem – 85 year old fittings. Our automotive electrical specialist sorted out the points. The engine ran beautifully – then a fuel leak from the fuel pump.

All of the time specific fittings have now been assembled on the engine. One of these took some time to restore and fit the HT leads to. This is a suppression tube fitted to both sides of the engine. We have recorded the process and the fittings in an article in this week’s edition of our Inside Track journal.

We hope to fit the rear armoured half of the body today once the points have been sorted out in the distributor.

The data plaques have arrived today and will be fitted next week. There are a significant number of these fitted to the interior of this vehicle and are used to denote specific details about the vehicle’s operation or classification.

The seat for the driver and radio operator are currently being completed. They will be collected next week.

Have a good weekend.
