Leichter Panzerspähwagen

  Sd.Kfz.222 Ausf. A

In Detail

Our Sd.Kfz.222 was acquired in the late 1990s. The chassis was nearly complete, missing very few components. There was, however, no body. For many years we did nothing with the chassis, focusing on the rather more pressing matter of the body. Our initial survey of the chassis indicated this was an Sd.Kfz 222 Ausf. A model. This was disappointing in one respect as there were a number of Series and variants within the Ausfuehrung A range. Each had fairly distinct differences between them. A correct body would be very hard to find. We did not know which specific Serie A leichte Panzerspaehwagen model Sd.Kfz.222 this was. Tom Jentz clarified the situation proving that this was a 4.Serie vehicle. He set us on a journey to find the body by providing us with a number of photographs and details of this particular 4.Serie le. Panzerspaehwagen.

The main focus was as usual the chassis number. The chassis number revealed we had a 4. Serie Sd.Kfz.222. Using the original Auto Union Horch archive records, Tom Jentz established that Auto Union AG. Werk Horch completed the chassis in March 1941. The official designation for the chassis was schwerer Personenkraftwagen 1 (s.Pkw.1) Fahrgestell Typ 801 and was used specifically for the le.Pz.Sp.Wg.Sd.Kfz.222 Ausf. A. The research undertaken by Tom initially and later with the publication of Panzer Tracts 13/1 by Tom Jentz and Hilary Doyle provided a rich source of information.

Over the last 20 years, various body parts and components have been collected and then stored away in preparation for our project. In the process of collecting these pieces for the project, we have picked up a sizeable number of Ausf B parts as well. These parts, engine, gearboxes, and patterns are for a restoration project of our early Sd.Kfz.223 Ausf. B. sometime in the future.

The restoration of the Sd.Kfz.222 Ausf. A 4. Serie chassis started in 2019, together with the Sd.Kfz.223 Ausf. and Sd.Kfz 261 Ausf B 5 Serie chassis..
