Good progress this week on both the Wheatcroft Collection Sd.Kfz.223 and the LP1, with some interesting components coming together.
THE WHEATCROFT COLLECTION SD.KFZ.223
Several components were manufactured and fitted this week.
The clock holder has been made, ready to house a ‘Stationsuhr’ (station clock) – often incorrectly nicknamed ‘Funkeruhren‘ (radio operator’s clock) by collectors today.
We also replicated the ‘3kg Ladung’ mines, working from an original example in the Foundation’s collection. The vehicle would have carried four of these, stored in pairs inside the ‘Behälter für Sprengminen‘ fitted to the rear fenders.
Finally, the armoured sump guard has been fitted.
Australian LP1
The engine block is still with the specialist cleaners.
In the meantime, we’ve mocked up templates for the seat cushions to check the fit. We’re still researching how the originals were made, so these templates will help us get the final versions right.
Alex is continuing with the gearbox rebuild now that the new bearings have arrived – manufactured to original specification to replace the worn and rusted originals.
We’ve also started removing the heads from another engine. This comes from a future restoration project that uses the same engine type, and we’ll be using some of its parts for the LP1.
OTHER UPDATES
We’re still waiting on the Sturmgeschütz III radiator and the Sd.Kfz.223 dynamo – no news yet on either.
LOOKING AHEAD
Next week we’ll continue work on the LP1.
