Sd.Kfz.222 4.Serie, Sd.Kfz.223 3.Serie, Sd.Kfz.261 5.Serie, Jagdpanther 411

The fenders are currently the focus for the Sd.Kfz.222 4.Serie. The rear two fender supports for both the Foundation’s Sd.Kfz.223 3.Serie and the Wheatcroft Collection’s example are now in hand. The next step for these is to add the rolled edge mild steel panel covering as per the original. The tread plate has also to be done. We gathered many of these sheets in previous years for this le.Pz.Sp.Wg. and other vehicle projects.

The Sockel or gun mount for the Sd.Kfz.222 4.Serie is also under focus given that we have two distinct types within the collection to choose from. This will be the subject of an extensive series of articles to be published in Inside Track in coming weeks.

The test copy instrument panel for these armoured cars has been machined. This is a proof copy to check the fitting of the instrumentation and electrical appliances.

The hull to chassis mounting brackets are well down the road for the Sd.Kfz.222 4.Serie. Each of these was originally fitted by hand. Given the small differences between each hull this requires small shifting of the hull along the chassis to position the brackets correctly. No small task given the size and weight of the armoured hull.

The rear cross member for the Sd.Kfz.261 5.Serie Fahrgestell chassis is being assembled / welded together. This will be blasted and primed prior to being fitted to the Sd.Kfz.261 5.Serie chassis next week. A complex construction which would have been impossible to create without exacting details provided by our Norwegian friend. Thank you!

Continued research into the Jagdpanther and its wartime use of coolants during wintertime has resulted in Part 2 of Preparations for Winter in which we have provided much surviving imagery and artefacts showing illustrating this activity.
